Mission & Vision

Our Mission: Love God, Love People, Make Disciples

As part of the global church we know that we exist for a reason and a purpose. We resonate with the mission statement of our denomination, which is based on the Great Commandment and the Great Commission. Jesus taught those who follow him to, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength” and “To love our neighbor as yourself” (Luke 10:27).

We find Jesus giving final instructions to his followers in Matthew 28:19-20 where he says, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” We see our mission being summed up in these to great instructions of our Lord.

Our Vision: Calvary Free Methodist Church is a worship-filled and welcoming community, who desires to make holistic disciples through: Scriptural teaching; heartfelt prayer; fruitful fellowship; accountable stewardship— extending the loving presence of God to all people in Lexington and beyond.

Our vision statement describes how we plan to live out our mission in Lexington and beyond. But what does it all mean. Below are some brief explanations of what we mean by the key phrases in our vision statement:

Worship-filled: Everything we do as a church and as individuals is for the glory of God. We gather for corporate worship on Sunday mornings, but worship goes beyond that—worship is something we live out each day. We send out our people to live lifestyles of worship, so that they see every element of everyday as an opportunity to give praise and glory to God.

Welcoming: All people are welcome in our church, because all people need to have a relationship with Jesus Christ. As a church, we understand that welcoming doesn’t mean waiting for the right people to come in the doors of our church, we actively invite and welcome in people we know or encounter who need to know Jesus Christ more fully. And when they do take the step to enter our church, they feel like they are at home, participating in a family that cares for and loves one another.

Holistic Disciples:

A holistic disciples is someone who follows Jesus in every area of their life. As a church, we exist to make disciples who in turn make disciples. Multiplication of disciples is the natural result of our growth as disciples of Jesus Christ. We have some specific ideas (listed below) that we believe are necessary in enabling us to grow into mature, holistic disciples of Christ, who go and make more mature, holistic disciples of Christ.

Scriptural teaching: We understand that an integral part in our growth as followers of Jesus Christ is understanding and living Scripture. While we encourage everyone to read and apply Scripture daily, we gather together several times throughout the week to approach God’s Word together. We are taught by pastors, leaders, and one another as together we learn what it means to apply Scripture to our daily lives.

Heartfelt prayer: We believe in the power of prayer, and we believe that God hears us when we pray. We encourage everyone in our church to pray daily for their personal needs, but we also urge everyone to be praying for the needs of others in our church, the needs of our community, the needs of our nation, and the needs of our world. We offer several communal time of prayer throughout the week. We try, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to foster an authentic community that is able to share even the deepest struggles (physical, emotional, and spiritual), as well as the greatest joys. We ultimately pray for God’s Kingdom to come, and His will to be done, in us and through us.

Fruitful fellowship: Fellowship is key to building relationships and to fostering an environment where authentic community can exist. By adding the adjective “fruitful”, we acknowledge that something transformative happens when we regularly fellowship together in the presence of the Holy Spirit. It is not fellowship for the sake of just hanging out, but fellowship for the sake of growing in relationship with one another, and ultimately growing in our relationship with Christ, together. We have both larger fellowship events (i.e. potlucks) as well as smaller gatherings (i.e. discipleship groups), that meet on a regular basis for the purpose of growth in our relationship with Christ and one another.

Accountable stewardship: Stewardship is a vital aspect of what it means to be a disciple of Christ. We acknowledge that everything we have is a gift from God: our money, our time, our gifts, our passions, our talents, our personality, and our life experiences. We challenge complete and total surrender of every area of life to God’s control, and we hold one another accountable to using every gift from God for the furthering of His Kingdom. We acknowledge that this means giving sacrificially of our money, time, gifts, etc.

Extending the loving presence of God to all people in Lexington & beyond:

This is God’s work, and it is the work that He calls every church to participate in. We strive, with the strength and grace of the Holy Spirit, to partner in the work of expanding God’s Kingdom here in our city, state, nation, and world, in every way God calls us to do so. We partner with God to bring holistic healing (physical, emotional, and spiritual) in our world, so that all may experience the life abundant that Jesus offers. We know that we exist in order to demonstrate God’s love, grace, and healing to our hurting community and world.
